Thomas Allen

February 25, 2010

My background in art combined with my job in a library gives me a real affinity for artists who incorporate books into their work.  For example, I’m crazy for the work of photographer Thomas Allen.  Allen cuts, slices, folds, and manipulates covers from vintage pulp paperbacks and then photographs them in wonderful scenarios.  The juxtaposition of images creates new stories with an almost cinematic quality.

I love this work!  Sadly, I read on his blog that an exhibit last September “closed the book” on his work with vintage pulp paperbacks.  How disappointing, but it will be interesting to see where he goes from here. You can find more of his creative work on the Foley Gallery website.

The Bigger the Hair, the Closer to God

February 22, 2010

Nothing brings joy to my heart like a funny album cover from the past. So what is it about gospel music and oversized hairdos? Here are a few classic examples. God bless these staggering bouffants.

Mount Righteous

February 22, 2010

Last night I went to see this music group from Texas called Mount Righteous.  They are sort of a punk marching band with trumpet, trombone, sousaphone, glockenspiel, bass drum, cymbals, snare drums, electric guitar, etc.  It was a fun, upbeat, energetic show.  This is feel-good music. Check out this video of one of their songs.

Walking Man

February 20, 2010

Earlier this month Alberto Giacometti’s bronze sculpture “Walking Man” sold at Sotheby’s auction house in London for $104.3 million.  That makes it the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction.  Can any piece of art be worth that much money?  It boggles the mind.  I think this is much more about commerce than art.

Welcome to My Blog

February 20, 2010

I’ve decided to join the blogosphere.  I like to think of it as my little slice of the world wide web.  I have no set agenda other than to share things I like and find interesting.  Maybe you will too.
